Stadium of memories
The King Power Stadium, also known as Leicester City Stadium, hosts a range of live sports events, but it’s best known as the home of ‘the Foxes’, Leicester City, who moved here from their former ground, Filbert Street, in 2002. In 2016, they were crowned Premier League champions.
An all-seater stadium with a capacity of 32,313, it’s the 20th largest football ground in England, but as well as hosting live Premier League football, it stages international football and rugby, Premiership rugby union, and also runs stadium tours.
As a hotel near the King Power Stadium, we’ve been lucky enough to share the atmosphere of some amazing days and nights there.
Leicester City F.C.
The main draw of the King Power Stadium is, of course, to watch live Leicester City play in the Premier League. The Foxes have had some great moments here, but nothing beats them lifting the Premier League trophy in 2016 – which then saw them play Champions League football there the following season.
As well as domestic football, the King Power Stadium has hosted the England men’s team on two occasions. They won both times. Jamaica have also used the stadium twice, in 2003 and 2006. With football fans travelling from around the world to watch the games at the stadium, The Belmont Hotel near the King Power Stadium makes perfect matchday accommodation.
As well as football, the King Power Stadium has also seen some great matches with the oval ball. Leicester Tigers – who usually play home matches at Welford Road - have used the stadium on six occasions, most recently in May 2009 in the Guinness Premiership semi-final.
The King Power Stadium hosted three matches during the 2015 Rugby World Cup, with fans travelling from all over the world to visit the city; our boutique hotel in Leicester city centre was lucky enough to welcome scores of rugby fans from overseas, and was the perfect place to relax once the action was over.
King Power Stadium tours provide a great opportunity to see what the stadium has to offer as well as checking out the club's memorabilia - including the Premier League trophy. The tours can be booked on the LCFC website and are run by an experienced tour guide who will give you a behind the scenes tour of the stadium - including both dressing rooms and the home dugout.
